If you have ever tried to scan a glass bottle, a clear plastic lens, or a resin prototype, you know the result: the software either sees right through it or fills the space with "ghost" data. Transparent objects are notoriously difficult because most 3D scanners rely on light bouncing off a surface to calculate distance. When light passes through, the scanner has nothing to "see."

Here is why transparent objects cause so many problems and how to get them into your CAD software.

The "See-Through" Problem

Most 3D scanners work by projecting patterns of light onto an object and recording how that light deforms across the surface.

The Problem: Transparent materials (glass, clear plastic) are essentially "invisible" to these scanners. The light passes straight through, refracts at strange angles, or creates complex reflections inside the material.

The Result: The scanner records nothing (holes) or captures the background behind the object, resulting in a distorted, unusable mess.

3 Ways to "Solidify" Transparent Objects

To scan something clear, you must fundamentally change its surface properties to be opaque and matte.

  1. The Gold Standard: Scanning Spray
    This is the most effective method. A fine mist of 3D scanning spray (like AESUB) coats the object in a thin, matte white layer. This gives the scanner's light something solid to "bounce" off of. The best part? Many of these sprays are vanishing/sublimating, meaning they disappear on their own after a few hours, leaving your original, pristine object behind.

2.  Strategic Dusting (Alternative)
If you don't have specialized scanning spray, some users have success with very fine, non-permanent powders (like certain types of foot or baby powder). However, be careful—this can be messy, harder to clean, and potentially riskier for delicate electronics or intricate internal geometries.

3.  The "Hidden" Alternative: Advanced Optics
If you are in a professional R&D environment, there are high-end industrial scanners (often using specific wavelengths or specialized software algorithms) that can handle some translucent materials without sprays. However, for 99% of desktop and prosumer 3D scanners, these options are prohibitively expensive and not designed for hobbyist use.

The Importance of Surface Prep

The reality of 3D scanning is that your success often depends more on how you prepare the object than on the expensive hardware itself. Learning to handle challenging materials like clear, reflective, or black surfaces is exactly what separates a frustrated beginner from an experienced technician.

By mastering these preparation techniques, you ensure that your digital models are as clean and accurate as the physical parts you are attempting to reproduce. This attention to detail at the start of your workflow ultimately saves you hours of tedious manual cleanup in your CAD software later on.
