How much electricity does a 3D printer use?

For most hobbyist desktop 3D printers, electricity consumption is relatively low and generally comparable to or less than that of a modern TV or a desktop computer.

Heating Elements: The nozzle and the heated bed are the primary power consumers. While heating up (preheating) causes a power spike, the average draw drops significantly once the printer is at temperature and simply maintaining it. 

Print Settings: Printing with high-temperature materials (like ABS or Nylon) requires higher bed and chamber temperatures, which increases the average wattage compared to printing cooler materials like PLA.

Duration: Because 3D printing is a slow, gradual process, the total energy consumed depends on the length of the print job.

Hourly Cost = (Average Wattage ÷ 1,000) × Local Electricity Rate per kWh.

For most home users, running a 3D printer typically costs between R0.20 and R0.90 per hour. Compared to high-power household appliances like microwaves (~1,200W) or space heaters (~1,500W), the energy footprint of a standard 3D printer is modest and rarely becomes a significant line item on a utility bill.

To wrap it all up, the electricity usage of a standard 3D printer is quite modest, typically costing only a few cents per hour in Rand terms. While there are minor differences depending on your material choice and printer type, it is far more energy-efficient than most common household appliances.
