The invention of the 3D printer traces back to the early 1980s.
1981: Dr. Hideo Kodama of the Japanese Municipal Industrial Research Institute is credited with inventing an early rapid prototyping system using a layer-by-layer approach with UV-sensitive resin. Although he was unable to complete the patent requirements, he is recognized for creating one of the first 3D printing technologies.
1983–1984: Chuck Hull, an American inventor, developed the concept of stereolithography (SLA) in 1983 and filed his patent for the "Apparatus for Production of Three-Dimensional Objects by Stereolithography" in 1984.
1986: Hull's patent for SLA was officially granted, and he co-founded 3D Systems to commercialize the technology. He is widely regarded as the "Father of 3D Printing".
1988: 3D Systems released the first commercial 3D printer, the SLA-1.
During the late 1980s, other foundational technologies were also developed, such as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) by Carl Deckard in 1988 and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) by S. Scott Crump, who patented his invention in 1989.
Following these early breakthroughs, the 1990s and early 2000s marked a period of refinement and expanded industrial use.
During this time, 3D printing—then primarily known as "rapid prototyping"—was largely restricted to high-end engineering and manufacturing environments due to the extreme costs of the machines and the complexity of the materials required. It remained a specialized tool for companies to create quick functional prototypes without the expensive overhead of traditional mold-making or tooling.
The landscape changed dramatically around 2005 with the birth of the RepRap (Replicating Rapid Prototyper) project. This open-source initiative aimed to create a 3D printer capable of printing its own parts, effectively democratizing the technology.
By making designs and software publicly available, the project sparked a global maker movement, eventually leading to the explosion of affordable, desktop 3D printers that we see today. This shift moved 3D printing from a closed, industrial-only domain into the hands of hobbyists, artists, and small business owners worldwide.
Today, 3D printing has evolved from those specialized industrial origins into a versatile technology used everywhere—from home workshops in South Africa to advanced medical and aerospace manufacturing worldwide.
