Large Format 3D Printing in South Africa

At Create It 3D, we specialize in large format 3D printing for oversized prototypes, functional parts, and custom designs. Whether it’s an automotive component, industrial tooling, architectural model, or display piece, we can manufacture complex, large-scale items with strength and precision.

Our process combines industrial-grade printers with expert assembly techniques. Large parts are produced in smaller sections and then joined seamlessly, ensuring the final piece is strong, lightweight, and accurate — no matter the size or complexity.

What is Large Format 3D Printing?

Large format 3D printing makes it possible to produce full-scale, life-sized, or oversized parts that would be impossible or uneconomical with traditional methods. By breaking projects into intelligently designed sections, we can print and assemble them into a single functional unit without compromising quality.

This approach is ideal for:

  • Oversized prototypes for engineering and design validation

  • Custom automotive parts such as bumpers, dashboards, or panels

  • Industrial tools, jigs, and molds

  • Marketing and display pieces including signage and props

  • Architectural elements and models

Benefits of Large Format 3D Printing

  • 🏗️ Unlimited scale – We can produce parts as big as your project requires by joining printed sections.

  •

  • Faster turnaround – Quickly produce large prototypes without waiting for molds or machining.

  •

  • 💰 Cost savings – More affordable than traditional large-scale manufacturing.

  •

  • 🎨 Customisation – One-off and low-volume large parts made to your exact requirements.

  •

  • 🔧 Durability – Engineering-grade materials for strong, functional parts.

Materials for Large Format Printing

  • We use a range of materials to suit both display and functional applications:

    • PLA+ – Affordable and great for models or props.

    •

    • PETG – Strong and impact-resistant, good for outdoor or industrial parts.

    •

    • ABS / ASA – Heat-resistant and tough for automotive and tooling applications.

    •

    • Carbon Fibre Composites – Lightweight but high-strength for performance components.

3D printed radiator shroud replacement by Create It 3D in South Africa

Problem

A client came to us with a broken radiator shroud for their vehicle. The original part was no longer available from suppliers, and without it, the engine was at risk of overheating and reduced efficiency. Buying a new radiator assembly just to replace the shroud would have been costly and unnecessary.

Solution

  • Reverse Engineering / 3D Scanning → We scanned the broken shroud and reconstructed it digitally to ensure a perfect fit.

  •

  • 3D Printing in Heat-Resistant Material → Printed the replacement using Glass Fill Nylon for its toughness, heat tolerance, and UV resistance.

  •

  • Finishing & Strength Testing → Smoothed and reinforced the part to handle vibration and continuous exposure under the hood.

  •

Outcome

The client received a fully functional radiator shroud replacement at a fraction of the cost of sourcing a new assembly. The vehicle’s cooling system was restored to optimal performance, extending the life of the radiator and avoiding unnecessary expenses.

Large 3D printed storage bin by Create It 3D in South Africa

Problem

The client required a prototype storage bin for a van to validate fit, durability, and overall design before committing to expensive tooling. Without a physical model, there was a risk of costly rework, delays, and wasted investment if the final design failed to perform as expected.

Solution

Using CAD design, we recreated the bin with precise dimensions and 3D printed it in modular sections that were later joined together. This approach allowed us to build a full-size prototype quickly and cost-effectively. A durable plastic filament was chosen to ensure the bin could withstand installation testing and real-world handling during the evaluation phase.

Outcome

Within a matter of days, the client received a functional prototype that fit seamlessly into the Ford van. The bin was successfully tested for fit and usability, enabling the client to validate the design early in the process. By leveraging 3D printing, costly delays were avoided and confidence was gained before moving forward with tooling and production.
