Disposing of 3D printing waste is one of the most critical responsibilities for any resin maker. Unlike standard household trash or regular sink water, liquid photopolymer resin and alcohol-heavy cleaning wash are hazardous to the environment and aquatic life.
Pouring uncured resin or contaminated Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) down the drain can clog plumbing, damage septic systems, and cause severe ecological harm.
Properly curing, neutralizing, and disposing of your waste keeps your workshop eco-friendly and compliant with safe handling practices.
How to Dispose of Uncured Liquid
Resin and Paper Towels
Uncured liquid resin should never enter the municipal water system or normal trash unhardened.
Cure Before Trashing:
Pour leftover scrap resin into a shallow disposable container or onto a silicone mat, and place it outside in direct sunlight or under a dedicated UV curing lamp. Once the resin is completely solid and hardened through, it is chemically inert and safe to throw away in your regular household trash.
Harden Paper Towels and Wipes:
Paper towels, cotton pads, and gloves contaminated with liquid resin must also be fully cured before disposal. Lay them out in the sun or under a UV light until the wet resin on them hardens solid. Tossing wet, uncured resin rags into an ordinary trash can creates a major fire and environmental hazard.
How to Dispose of Contaminated Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) or Water Wash
As you clean your print bed, build plate, and models, your wash station liquid becomes heavily saturated with dissolved, uncured resin particles.
Let the Sun Do the Work (Sun Curing):
Pour your dirty, cloudy IPA or water-wash liquid into a clear glass or transparent plastic container and leave it sitting in direct sunlight for a few hours. The UV rays will cure the suspended resin particles, causing them to clump together and settle as a solid sludge at the bottom of the container.
Filter and Reuse:
Once the suspended resin has settled and hardened, pour the clear, recycled alcohol through a fine mesh paint strainer or coffee filter into a clean bottle. You can reuse this filtered IPA for initial pre-washes on your next batch of prints.
Disposing of Saturated Wash Liquid:
When your cleaning liquid is completely spent and cannot be filtered further, let any remaining alcohol evaporate entirely in a well-ventilated area. Once fully evaporated, cure the leftover solid resin residue in the sun before throwing it away.
Important Note:
Never pour cloudy wash liquid containing suspended liquid resin down a household drain or storm sewer. Always check your local municipal hazardous waste guidelines for rules on disposing of bulk chemical solvents.
