Water-Washable Resin vs Standard Resin

Which Should You Choose?

Choosing the right type of photopolymer resin is one of the first major decisions you will make when setting up or expanding your 3D printing workflow.

While both standard resin and water-washable resin produce stunning, high-detail prints on SLA, DLP, and MSLA printers, their post-processing workflows, chemical compositions, and durability differ significantly.

Understanding these differences will help you choose the best material for your shopify blog projects, miniatures, or functional prototypes.

What Is Standard Resin?

Standard 3D printer resin is the traditional industry baseline. It relies on chemical solvents like Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) or denatured alcohol to clean uncured surface residue off prints after printing.

Pros:

Highly reliable, less prone to cracking, offers a wider range of engineering and flexible formulations, and generally produces very crisp, stable details.

Cons:

Requires a dedicated supply of chemical solvents (IPA) for cleaning, which adds ongoing material costs and requires careful chemical management.

What Is Water-Washable Resin?

Water-washable resin contains specialized hydrophilic chemical additives that allow uncured surface resin to dissolve and wash away directly in tap water rather than chemical alcohols.

Pros:

Eliminates the need for expensive bulk Isopropyl Alcohol, makes cleanup faster and cheaper, and has a less harsh chemical smell for indoor or home workshops.

Cons:

More brittle overall, highly sensitive to moisture during curing (which can cause cracking or warping if prints are not fully dry), and requires careful wastewater disposal since rinse water cannot simply be poured straight down the drain without sun-curing the suspended resin first.

Key Comparisons to Consider

Post-Processing Cost & Convenience:

Water-washable resin wins on convenience since you use regular tap water for cleaning. Standard resin requires buying and managing gallons of IPA, though your wash solvent can be filtered and reused many times.

Print Durability & Strength:

Standard resin generally offers superior structural integrity, impact resistance, and long-term durability. Water-washable prints tend to be more brittle and can absorb ambient moisture if left unsealed.

Odor and Toxicity:

Both resins emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and require proper ventilation and PPE (gloves and masks). Do not let the lack of alcohol smell fool you into thinking water-washable resin is entirely non-toxic.
