ABS vs. PLA: The Reality of Choosing Your Filament

When you’re setting up a print, the choice of material is everything. While PLA has long been the beginner’s go-to, ABS is often whispered about as the "pro" choice for tough, industrial-style parts. But is ABS actually better, or is it just more of a headache to print with? The truth is, it depends entirely on what you’re trying to build and how much patience you have for your printer’s quirks.

What Makes ABS Different?

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is the same plastic used to make LEGO bricks. It is celebrated for being significantly tougher and more heat-resistant than PLA.

When ABS wins: If you are designing parts that need to live in high-temperature environments—like inside a car during a South African summer or as functional, load-bearing parts—ABS is usually the superior material. It’s also easier to sand and can even be smoothed using acetone vapor for a professional finish.

The downside: ABS is notoriously difficult to print. It shrinks as it cools, which leads to warping and cracking, meaning you typically need an enclosed 3D printer to get a consistent result. Plus, it releases fumes while printing that require a well-ventilated space.

Why PLA Stays on Top

Even with the strength of ABS, PLA remains the most popular choice for the vast majority of makers. It’s not about which material is stronger, but which one is actually practical for your setup.

Why people love it: PLA is exceptionally easy to work with, rarely warps, and doesn't require an enclosure to get a clean, detailed print. For most home projects, gadgets, or decorative pieces, PLA provides more than enough durability without the hassle of specialized equipment.

The limitation: As we've covered, it can’t handle high heat and is more brittle than ABS. It isn't the best choice for parts that face extreme mechanical stress or heat.

The "better" material is simply the one that gets your project across the finish line. If you’re just starting out or working on detailed models, stick with PLA. If you’ve got a project that demands high heat resistance and you have a printer set up to handle the challenge, that’s when you reach for ABS.
