Leather is one of the most luxurious and rewarding materials to laser engrave. Whether you are personalizing wallets, journal covers, patch hats, or keychains, the result is a rich, permanent, high-contrast brand mark.
However, because leather is an organic material, working with it requires careful attention to material types, laser parameters, and safety.
Choosing the Right Leather (and What to Avoid)
Not all leather behaves the same under a laser beam:
Vegetable-Tanned Leather (The Gold Standard):
Veg-tan leather is tanned using natural tannins. It reacts exceptionally well to lasers, producing a deep, dark, rich brown or black contrast without harmful chemical reactions. It is ideal for tooling, stamping, and wet-forming after engraving.
Chrome-Tanned Leather (Use Caution):
Chrome-tanned leather is treated with chromium salts. While you can engrave it with a CO₂ laser, it tends to melt rather than burn cleanly, and it can release unpleasant odors.
Faux Leather / Pleather (Check the Material):
Avoid PVC-based faux leather entirely. When burned by a laser, PVC releases chlorine gas, which creates hydrochloric acid that will rapidly rust your machine and is extremely toxic to breathe. Instead, use polyurethane (PU) synthetic leather, which engraves safely and cleanly.
Recommended Laser Settings (Starting Baseline)
Every laser machine is different, but here is a safe starting baseline for a CO₂ laser (such as a 40W to 55W system):
Engraving (Raster): High speed, low-to-medium power (e.g., Speed:
300–500 mm/s, Power: 20–30%). You want to vaporize just the top layer to reveal the contrasting color underneath without burning holes through the hide.
Cutting (Vector):
Slow speed, high power, multiple passes (e.g., Speed: 15–25 mm/s, Power: 70–85%, 2–3 passes depending on thickness).
Note for Diode Lasers:
Diode lasers can engrave veg-tan and dark PU leather nicely, but because they have a lower power density for organic materials, you may need to slow your speed down significantly or run multiple light passes.
Essential Safety Guidelines
Ventilation is Non-Negotiable:
Burning organic hide and synthetic materials produces thick, heavy smoke and potent odors. Always ensure your laser cutter is hooked up to an effective exhaust fan venting directly outdoors, or use a dedicated air purifier/filter unit.
Beware of Toxic Fumes:
Never engrave mystery leather or unknown synthetic sheets unless you can 100% verify they are PVC-free.
Common Problems and Troubleshooting
Problem 1:
Sticky Residue or Soot Build-Up
Cause:
Smoke and burnt organic oils settle back onto the surface of the leather around the engraving.
Solution:
Mask your leather with transfer tape or low-tack painter's tape before engraving. The laser will burn through the tape, and you can simply peel it off afterward to reveal a completely clean surface free of soot marks.
Problem 2:
Edges Curling or Warping
Cause:
Too much heat concentrated in one area, or using leather that is too thin.
Solution:
Use strong magnets or honeycomb pins to hold the leather completely flat against the bed. Speed up your engraving settings to reduce heat dwell time.
Problem 3:
Low Contrast / Faint Engraving
Cause:
Power is too low, or the leather finish is too reflective/light.
Solution:
Clean the leather surface with a damp cloth to remove oils, slightly lower your speed, or test a slightly higher power increment until you get a crisp dark burn.
Pro-Tip for Post-Processing
After engraving leather, wipe the surface gently with a damp microfiber cloth to remove any loose ash. To restore the leather's natural suppleness and protect the exposed fibers from moisture, apply a light coat of leather conditioner, mink oil, or neat's-foot oil. It deepens the contrast of the engraving and gives the piece a professional, finished retail look!
