Dangerous Materials You Should Never Put Inside a Laser Engraver

Laser cutting and engraving is a versatile way to manufacture products, but not all materials are safe to process. Introducing the wrong substance into a laser beam can instantly ruin your equipment, destroy your optics, or release toxic gases that pose severe health risks.

Materials That Release Toxic or Corrosive Gases

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):

The Hazard: When heated by a laser, PVC releases chlorine gas. When this gas mixes with moisture in the air or inside your machine, it forms hydrochloric acid.

The Result: It will rapidly rust and corrode your laser's metal frame, ruin delicate optical mirrors and lenses, and create extreme health hazards for anyone nearby.

Vinyl and Artificial Leather:

The Hazard: Many synthetic leather goods and adhesive vinyl rolls contain hidden PVC formulations.

The Result: Similar to raw PVC, burning them releases harmful chlorine compounds and toxic fumes. Always check material safety data sheets (MSDS) before processing synthetic hides.

Polycarbonate (Lexan):

The Hazard: Unlike acrylic, polycarbonate does not cut cleanly under a diode or CO2 laser.

The Result: It tends to discolor, catch fire easily, and emit heavy yellow toxic smoke rather than making a smooth cut.

Materials That Present Severe Fire and Safety Hazards

ABS and Polystyrene:

The Hazard: Plastics like ABS tend to melt, bubble, and catch fire very easily rather than vaporizing cleanly.

The Result: They leave behind a messy, charred residue and carry a high risk of igniting an open flame inside the enclosure.

Fiberglass and Carbon Fiber:

The Hazard: These composite materials are held together by epoxy resins and glues that release hazardous, toxic vapors when burned.

The Result: The laser cuts unevenly through the embedded fibers, and the resulting dust and fumes are extremely harmful to inhale.

Unknown Plastics or Foams:

The Hazard: If you cannot verify the chemical makeup of a scrap piece of plastic or foam, you should never risk placing it under the beam.

The Result: Many unknown packaging foams and plastics are highly flammable or produce cyanide gas when incinerated.

Safety Best Practices

Verify Before You Cut: Always consult the manufacturer's material safety data sheet or stick to known safe materials like untreated wood, natural leather, cardboard, and dark cast acrylic.

Protect Your Workshop: Equip your laser workspace with a proper exhaust and ventilation system to safely pull out approved smoke, and never leave an active engraving job unattended.
