What materials can a Diode Laser cut and Engrave?

A diode laser is a versatile tool for workshops and e-commerce production, but its blue light wavelength (typically 445nm) interacts differently with various materials compared to a CO2 laser.

Materials Diode Lasers Can Both Cut and Engrave

Wood & Timber:

Engraving: Excellent results on almost all wood types (hardwoods and softwoods).
Cutting: Cleanly cuts softwoods, plywood (like basswood and birch), and MDF. Thinner boards (3mm to 5mm) cut easily on lower-powered models, while 20W+ lasers can handle 10mm to 15mm timber in single or clean multi-passes.

Leather:

Engraving: Burns dark, high-contrast, permanent designs into vegetable-tanned and genuine leather.

Cutting: Slices easily through thin-to-medium leather hides for patches, wallets, and keychains. (Note: Avoid faux leather containing PVC, which releases toxic chlorine gas).

Cardboard, Paper & Cork:

Engraving & Cutting: Perfect for intricate papercrafts, packaging prototypes, coasters, and cork sheet items.

Fabric & Felt:

Engraving & Cutting: Great for cutting precise shapes out of felt (ideal for sewing and craft projects) and cotton, though synthetic fabrics must be tested carefully to prevent melting edges.

Materials Diode Lasers Can Engrave Only (Cannot Cut)

Anodized and Painted Metals:

Diode lasers cannot cut raw metals like aluminum or stainless steel because the metal reflects the beam. However, they can engrave anodized aluminum, painted metals, and brass if treated with a marking spray or laser marking paste.

Slate, Stone, and Ceramic:

The thermal shock of the laser creates a crisp, permanent frosted white or grey engraving on dark natural slate, ceramic tiles, and river stones.

Glass & Mirrors:

Clear glass is difficult because the beam passes right through it, but coating the glass with black paint, paper, or specialized marking spray allows the laser to etch a permanent frosted design.

Dark Acrylics:

Crucial Warning: Standard blue diode lasers cannot cut or engrave clear, blue, red, or transparent acrylics because the beam passes straight through them without absorbing heat. They can only cut and engrave dark, opaque acrylics (specifically matte black or dark grey cast acrylic).

Expanding Beyond Basics:

While wood and leather form the backbone of most e-commerce product lines, mastering dark cast acrylic and anodized metals unlocks high-margin custom signage and branded hardware.

Safety First:

Always verify material compositions—such as avoiding PVC-based synthetic leather—to protect both your equipment and your workspace from hazardous fumes.
