If you’ve just finished a 3D print and are wondering if it can handle life outside on the patio or in the garden, you’re not alone. It’s a common question, especially when you’re excited to put your work to use. However, when it comes to PLA, the short answer is: it’s generally not the best choice.
Why PLA Struggles Outside
PLA is fantastic for indoor prototypes and display pieces, but it has a few specific weaknesses that make it struggle once it’s exposed to the elements:
Low Heat Resistance: PLA has a relatively low glass transition temperature. This means that on a hot summer day in South Africa, your print can reach temperatures where the material starts to soften and lose its structural integrity.
Warping and Sagging: Once the material softens from the heat, it doesn’t take much for a print to warp, sag, or completely lose its intended shape.
UV Sensitivity: Beyond just heat, standard PLA does not hold up well to prolonged UV exposure, which can cause the material to become brittle and fade over time.
The Reality Check
Can you use PLA outdoors? Technically, yes—but only for very specific, temporary situations. If you are printing something that will sit in the shade, isn’t load-bearing, and isn't critical, it might survive for a while.
However, if your print is meant to be a permanent outdoor fixture, a garden tool, or anything that will be exposed to direct, harsh sunlight, PLA will likely let you down.
A Better Path Forward
If you want your hard work to last, it is worth looking at materials designed for tougher environments:
PETG: A much better "all-rounder." It handles heat better than PLA and is robust enough for most patio or garden applications.
ASA: If you need something that will stay out in the elements for years, this is the gold standard. It is specifically engineered to resist UV rays and high temperatures without degrading.
Bottom line: If you’re planning a project that’s going to live outside, save yourself the frustration and start with PETG or ASA. Your future self will thank you when the print is still in one piece after the first heatwave!
