A Beginner's Step-by-Step Workflow
Unboxing a new handheld 3D scanner is exciting, but stepping from hardware setup to a clean, exportable 3D mesh can feel overwhelming. Whether you are using a budget-friendly model like the Ferret Pro or a metrology-grade scanner like the Raptor, mastering the core workflow is key to getting great results.
Step 1:
Prep the Object and Environment
Before you point the scanner at your target, a little environmental prep saves hours of post-processing headache:
Tackle Difficult Surfaces:
Traditional structured-light and infrared scanners struggle with shiny, transparent, or pitch-black objects. If your part is reflective, apply a thin layer of washable scanning spray (or baby powder mixed with alcohol) to give the sensors something to grab.
Set Up Your Space:
Scan in a well-lit area free of heavy, shifting shadows. Avoid working directly under harsh outdoor sunlight unless your specific scanner model is rated for high-lux environments.
Step 2:
Choose Your Alignment Mode in Creality Scan
Launch the Creality Scan software and mount your target object on a turntable or position it securely on a workbench. Before hitting record, select the right tracking mode:
Feature Mode:
Best for mechanical parts, rough textures, and organic shapes with plenty of natural geometry.
Marker Mode:
Best for smooth, uniform surfaces (like a plain car door panel or cylinder) where you need to stick tracking stickers on or around the object to keep the software locked in.
Global Markers:
Ideal for large or complex parts to prevent minor frame errors from compounding over time.
Step 3:
Scan and Maintain Steady Movement
Click Start and begin your capture sweep:
Watch the Distance Bar: Keep an eye on the distance indicator in the software. Every scanner has an optimal operating window (e.g., 150mm to 700mm for entry models, closer for blue laser modes).
Keep It Smooth:
Move your hand or rotate the object at a steady, consistent pace. Avoid fast, jerky movements. If the scanner loses tracking, simply return to an area you've already scanned to re-engage the point cloud.
Step 4:
Post-Processing and Exporting
Once you have captured your scan, use the built-in tools in Creality Scan to clean up your data:
Remove Noise:
Use the eraser or selection tool to delete floating debris or the turntable surface from your workspace.
Mesh and Texture:
Click Seamless Integration or Make Mesh to turn your raw point cloud into a solid 3D model. If your model supports color, apply the RGB texture map last.
Export:
Save your finished file as an OBJ, STL, or PLY format depending on whether you are heading into CAD software for reverse engineering or prepping for a 3D printer.

Always run a quick calibration check if your scanner has been transported or stored for a while; starting with a fresh calibration ensures your tracking stays rock-solid from the first second of your scan.
