If you have spent any time in 3D scanning, you’ve likely encountered the "mesh" file. While it’s the immediate result of a scan, it is often just the beginning of the work. Mesh-to-CAD is the specific process of taking that raw, faceted digital surface and rebuilding it into a clean, professional engineering model.
Understanding the Difference
The Mesh: Think of a mesh as a "skin" made of thousands (or millions) of tiny triangles. It is a visual representation of your object. While it looks perfect to the eye, a mesh contains no "intelligence"—you cannot easily tell the software, "make this hole 2mm larger" or "flatten this surface."
The CAD Model: This is an "intelligent" model made of mathematically perfect arcs, lines, and planes. It is what engineers use to manufacture parts because it allows for precise measurements and easy modifications.
The Mesh-to-CAD Workflow
- Alignment: The raw mesh is imported and oriented in 3D space so it sits flat and aligned with standard axes (X, Y, and Z).

3. Solid Modeling: Using that traced data, the software creates a "solid" part. This file is now fully parametric, meaning every dimension can be adjusted in your CAD software (like Fusion 360 or SolidWorks).
Why Is This Necessary?
A raw mesh is often too heavy for engineering software to handle efficiently, and it lacks the precision required for high-end CNC machining. By converting to a solid CAD model, you gain:
