If you have ever started a resin 3D print, walked away, and returned only to find a flat, cured layer stuck firmly to the bottom of your resin vat instead of your build plate, you know the frustration.
Prints sticking to the FEP film (or nFEP/PFA film) rather than lifting with the build plate is one of the most common hurdles in resin 3D printing.
Why Does This Happen?
During every layer print cycle, the cured layer must peel away from the flexible film at the bottom of the vat. This peeling action creates strong suction forces. If the adhesion force holding the print to the build plate is weaker than the suction pull against the FEP film, the print peels right off the plate and stays stuck to the bottom of the vat.
Main Causes and How to Fix Them
Improper Build Plate Leveling:
If your build plate is unevenly spaced or too far from the screen during the home position, the initial bottom layers cannot squish and bond properly to the metal surface.
The Fix:
Re-level your build plate carefully according to your printer manufacturer's instructions, ensuring an even gap (often using a piece of paper).
Insufficient Bottom Exposure Time:
Bottom layers require significantly longer exposure times to anchor the model securely to the build plate. If your base exposure is too short, the bond will fail instantly.
The Fix:
Increase your bottom layer exposure time in your slicer settings (e.g., bumping it up by 5 to 15 seconds depending on your resin and light source).
Peel Forces and Orientation:
Printing large, flat cross-sections parallel to the build plate creates massive suction area with every lift, overpowering the plate adhesion.
The Fix:
Angle your models at 30 to 45 degrees in your slicer to minimize the surface area peeling off the FEP film at one time.
A Dirty or Worn FEP Film:
Scratches, cloudiness, or residual cured resin on the FEP create excessive friction and suction.
The Fix:
Clean your FEP thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol, or replace the film if it has deep scratches or stretched cloudy spots.
Temperature Issues:
Resin flows poorly and cures less reliably when the room or resin is too cold.
The Fix:
Keep your printing environment warm (ideally around 20°C to 25°C) to maintain proper resin viscosity.
Achieving Reliable Adhesion
Troubleshooting FEP sticking is all about tipping the physical scale in favor of your build plate. By dialing in your bottom exposure times, keeping your build plate meticulously clean and leveled, and orienting your models to reduce suction, you can eliminate failed prints and ensure every project lifts successfully on the first try.
